Whether you are moving to a new home, placing artwork into storage or transporting a painting elsewhere, careful handling can help prevent accidental damage.
This five step guide brings together practical advice from our expert conservators and fine art specialists, covering the key steps to consider when packing, transporting and rehanging an oil painting.
For valuable and important paintings, both historic and modern, professional assistance is always recommended. Our team can assist with specialist artwork collection, packing, transportation and rehanging, providing conservation-led care throughout the process.
If you are preparing to move an important painting or collection, contact our team to discuss how we can help protect your artwork from the moment it leaves the wall to the moment it is safely rehung.
Step 1: Check the Painting Before Moving
Before taking a painting down, examine both the artwork and frame. Look for flaking or lifting paint, loose frame ornament, unstable corners, tears or other existing damage.
Take clear photographs of the front, back and frame before packing. These provide a useful record of the painting’s condition before transportation. If paint is actively flaking or the frame feels unstable, consult a conservator before attempting to move it.
Step 2: Prepare a Safe Packing Area
Clear the route between the painting and the vehicle before removing it from the wall. Prepare a clean, padded area where the painting can safely rest while it is being packed.
Medium and large paintings should generally be handled by two people, with additional handlers or appropriate equipment for particularly large or heavy works. Avoid touching the painted surface, canvas or delicate decorative areas of the frame.
Step 3: Protect and Pack the Painting
Packing materials should never place pressure directly against the painted surface. Depending on the painting and frame, protection may include a clean barrier layer, rigid board, corner protection, cushioning and an outer moisture-resistant wrap.
The finished package should protect the painting against punctures, dents, moisture, shock and vibration while preventing it from shifting. Valuable, fragile, oversized or long-distance shipments may require a custom travel frame or professionally constructed crate rather than standard moving materials.
Step 4: Transport with Care
Keep paintings upright and securely restrained so they cannot slide, fall or have other objects placed against them. Avoid leaving artwork in a parked vehicle where temperatures can change rapidly.
For valuable collections or longer journeys, consider a specialist fine art transportation company. Professional art transport can provide appropriate handling, secure loading, cushioning and temperature-controlled vehicles where required.
Step 5: Unpack, Check and Rehang
Prepare the new hanging location before unpacking. Carefully remove each protective layer and compare the painting with your pre-move photographs, checking the paint surface, canvas and frame for changes.
Before rehanging, make sure the wall, hanging hardware and fixing method are appropriate for the painting’s size and weight. Large or valuable paintings may benefit from professional installation, particularly when they have substantial frames or require specialist hanging systems.
For important, fragile or high-value artworks, professional packing, transportation and installation can reduce unnecessary handling and ensure the painting is properly protected throughout every stage of its move.
What If a Painting Is Damaged During a Move?
If you notice a tear, puncture, dent, cracked or flaking paint, frame damage or another change after transportation, avoid attempting to flatten, clean or repair the area yourself. Keep any loose fragments and take clear photographs of the damage before further handling.
Our specialist conservators can assess and restore oil paintings affected during transportation, from minor surface damage to torn canvases, paint loss and damaged frames. We can also assist with professional collection, packing, transportation and rehanging, helping to protect valuable artworks throughout the entire moving process.
If your painting has been damaged during a move, or you need specialist assistance preparing artwork for transportation, contact our team for advice and an assessment.
